Differential Guard
I designed and built this while the cover was still on. Would be easier if cover is removed.
Materials to get started. Cardboard is cut in 1" strips. |
Uncut pattern |
Taped the pattern in place to trace out the back. |
Once traced out from behind, I cut the pattern, fit it, cut it and fit it. I also rounded off the ends. |
I then traced it to get a solid pattern. |
Cut out the solid pattern |
Taped it in place to mark the holes. |
After marking where each bolt is at, I hit them with a hammer to indent the cardboard. This way I knew where to drill. |
A mark where the bolt is at |
I cut the base plate with a Plasma Cutter and then drilled the holes. |
Made sure the bolt holes lined up. |
I used 1/2" pencil rod to make the guards. The ends that will be welded to the base plate were measured up 1" and then bent to clear the cover. |
I used a piece of pipe cut about 3/4" wide for the center piece. This is a 2" pipe. I tacked the two main pieces on first. Used a level to level the center piece up with the base. |
Here the are all tacked in place. Once I leveled it side to side for the two pieces above, I level it top to bottom and tacked the center bottom piece in place. Then tacked the two bottom side pieces in place. I thought that 5 legs would look good and that if I did 7, it would look crowded. It is up to the builder though at what looks best. You could put a leg inbetween each bolt hole to get the 7 legs. |

I then sandblasted it |
Then primered it |
Shot it black and added a wheel center cap painted red |
The center cap |
Bolted it in place. You have to get longer bolts to compensate for the thickness of the base. I got ones that are a 1/4" longer over stock. |
